The problem was the RC fucked with investard's money. Banning those problem cards was a great move for the format, a horrible move for scalpers and investards, who are a major source of MTG's income. I have no doubt that at least *some* of the death threats were real because they caused some of these dumbfucks who can't into real stocks to genuinely lose hundreds, thousands, and in a few cases tens of thousands of dollars worth of ponzi scheme cardboard money.
If WOTC didn't step in and take over with the assurance that they will never ever ban anything but the most obvious problems in the format while glossing over their myriad of shit design mistakes with the limp wristed "Game Changers" rule, investards would've lost confidence in their ability to keep grifting the game and there was a real possibility for a secondary market bank run causing a collapse in prices; good for the player base obviously, very bad for investards and bad for WOTC.
