Russia = Moscovia. Moscow itself is Mongol / Golden Horde creation.
Before Mongols, in time of the Rus' state, it was inhabited by Finno-Ugric people called Meryans. Mongols utterly destroyed them and new people from what is now Ukraine moved in to the area, together with other refugees from steppe region (we would call them Tatars now but back then Cumans/Kipchaks and other Turkic people).
This mix developed to Grand Duchy of Moscovia under Mongol reign. Mongols used this new proto-state as tax collector (pay or die) for all other neighboring regions. They killed and maimed everyone because they were poor and couldnt pay. Single biggest victim was Republic of Novgorod, largest European state at the time. City of Novgorod had population size of London or Paris at the time. Muscovites massacred them and annexed the country, now they pretend it was 'always Russia'.
Eventually this Muscovite mafia state was powerful enough to fuck off the Mongols. Then Moscovia changed it's name to Russia.
This is how Moscovia became to be. Completely non-European state located at Eastern Europe and hated by everyone for their deeds.
