Come the fuck on, anon. I never lived in an abusive household like Harry Potter. I'm not a violent dickwad like Travis Touchdown. I'm not a handy farmboy like Luke Skywalker. I'm definitely not a teenager like half of protagonists.
But I can still understand how they are feeling and why at all times. I can feel wowed by their triumphs, I can feel their spite and envy and rage at their enemies, I cheer them on when they ride into the sunset with their love interest who is decidedly not my type.
When I play a video game, I pick a protagonist who is the kind of character I find interesting and who will do interesting things. I am their fight choreographer and scriptwriter. If I make a choice, it's the choice I think they would make.
You know what? If you can't put yourself into the shoes of, and cry for, a character with diametrically opposed life and morality to you, or who is mindless robot or simple animal or inhuman creature, then you are a subhuman with an underdeveloped brain.
