Told everyone about arena. Nobody played it. Arcades were still around. People used to crowd around mortal Kombat and street fighter. Emulation was starting up with pokemon and people pirated so much dreamcast stuff. Halo two over live was a blast and so were the lan parties.

I remember when people started to play online in LAN party, it's called LAN, it's a local area network my dude.
I blame wow.
When you're connected to the internet, playing together its no longer so much fun because proximity is no longer really a necessity.
People will just join any random server and people started to play different games, they didn't even play together.
Last time I went to a LAN party, people were demanding internet (because it was a necessity to play these games) playing a bunch of different games, it was no longer one side of the table VS the other, it was complete Texas with Minecraft in one corner, bf4 in the other and Apex and a bunch of dudes were playing single player games.

It's impossible to organize Zoomers, they all have adhd and hate being told what to do, and since they have a hundred different games, they play whatever they're in the mood for, whenever.
They'll rage quit bf2 when they get baseraped and just play a different game.
I've just given up.

Next LAN party I organize, I will cut the internet cable, I suggest you do the same.

In the 90s, if you wanted to play a game with friends you had to go to each others houses to do so. I had a PS1, my buddy had a N64, and a 3rd friend had a Super Nintendo. We would walk to each others homes playing Twisted Metal, F-Zero, Street Fighter, Mario, and this Donald Duck Ninja game that was pretty sweet. We would get bored with one game then walk several blocks to another house to play their console. Sometimes the time we spent in-between playing and just hanging out outside was more fun than the games themselves. We would pretend to catch Pokemon and run around throwing "energy balls" at each other like we were in Dragon Ball Z.
Then we got older, got PC's and started having Friday Night Lan party sleepovers playing Star Craft, Age of Empires 2, Quake, Halo, etc. Watched South Park, Trailer Park Boys, Kenny vs Spenny, basically any show our parents didn't want us watching. Eventually it was also porn we found in our dads closet.
I think gaming peaked around the 360 and PS3 era but also started the decline to what see with gaming today. Online play on consoles really started taking off but then you had the infamous Horse Armor DLC, then Day 1 DLC, then "release the game broken and fix later" mentality. Also, back then it was conservatives who were trying to censor the fuck out of games for shit like sex in Mass Effect and the violence and cop killing in GTA.
That shit and censorship is par for the course today but back then it was universally hated. The issue was games like CoD, and Sports game brought in an audience of whales who really didn't care and still don't. It was also around this time that "Gamer" as a personality really hit the mainstream and where you get a lot of the cringe moments.
Then it's with Feninist Frequency and Gamer Gate that shit really went down hill.

The jump from Famicom to 256 color to 32 bit true color to 64 bit really was noticeable
Not only did the games change from 2d to 3d but everything else from sound design to level design changed along with it.
Leaps and bounds of improvement every few years will never be experienced by zoomers and gen aspergers. The only thing you'll experience is change in monetary schemes. You fucking missed the golden age of video games.
Not all games back then were smash hits but the smash hits have stuck until today. Compared to "financial success" games of now where it made lots of money but is immediately forgotten because it's old and busted one year later.

As a kid, walking into a video game store was one of the most exciting things ever. You didn't know everything you were looking at, but you know any game might be some kind of an exciting adventure.

There's exactly one video game store near where I live and it mostly sells retro games because it's not like PS4/5 and Switch games are enough to fill a store. And the funny thing is, walking in there is still just as exciting as it was going to those stores as a kid, because there's something exciting there, even if it's just on-sale PS3 games me and my friend want to try out. The fact that it sells old stuff from a better age is what makes it interesting.

This, it's not like they weren't a profitable business at the time already, rather than the fact that the games were thought up by people who didn't make design decision based on what would hopefully sell the most but by what they wanted to make and what they thought was fun. 16-bit up through the PS2 is kind of the sweet spot of gaming. The 360 brought in a bunch of normalfags and started us down the path to where we now are.

I got to experience Halo 3 during launch, so I got a taste of the golden era, but that was the tail end of the peak.

Most people didn't play video games like today, it only started going slightly more mainstream around 99-2001 especially when the PS2 released but even then it was still mostly an Asian/White dude hobby. Adults played arcade machines when they went to a bar or shopping mall but otherwise their lives didn't revolve around it.

Video games, anime, D&D, trading cards, tabletops, computers etc were still chiefly the domain of the young male nerd and otaku. All of that ended around 2007-2010 however with the release of the iPhone and Wii and high speed internet and social media.

People were obsessed with really really mid Playstation games like Driver or Midnight Club, from what I remember. And then Halo was something we were supposed to care about, even though all it did was dumb down FPS.
The Dreamcast bombed, good PC games bombed, good Nintendo games got poo-poo'd by retards like Adam Sessler.
It wasn't that good of an era.

By the middle part of the early 2000s, things were already going downhill and Halo (and GTA) is a big part of that. They brought in a lot of normalfags who would then go on to shit like Call of Duty. I think 2004 is basically the turning point in the utter ruination of video games as it's when both San Andreas and Halo 2 came out and Halo 2 was what really started the trend of treating video games as blockbuster entertainment for normalfags: it made more on release than Pirates of the Caribbean 2 as a movie that same week and had a giant Hollywood level marketing budget behind it. This was when you could feel the shift in places like G4 and vidya sites like IGN to start appealing more to the bro gamers and the derision towards Japanese games that basically last until the later part of the 2010s because Japanese games weren't cool now that video games had cool mainstream shit to appeal to cool people.

On PC side hardware was developing in massive leaps and you had to upgrade often. On the positive side graphics cards didn't cost a fucking month's wage. There was a lot of fighting with drivers and hardware compatibility, shit wasn't that standardized and there were more companies around. It was perfectly possibly a new game just refused to work with your PC.

A lot of control schemes were awkward and developers were trying things out a lot more. Hell, even controller schemes were far from standard and it wasn't until later PS1 that the twin stick control scheme came around, hence the famous "tank controls" in Resident Evil for example.

Arkham Knight was mostly hated because of the horrible performance, back then that hadn't become the norm yet. Nowadays people just enable DLSS and consume happily. WB actually offered refunds on Steam even if you had more than 2 hours played, that's how bad it was. The performance was so terrible Nvidia literally had to speed up their gameworks Arkham Knight trailer, showing off their proprietary steam and rain, because they couldn't get it to run at 60FPS with those effects on.

The craziest thing about games then was the MASSIVE increases we were seeing to graphical fidelity and hardware back then.
Moores law was still in effect and shit was basically doubling in capability every year.
Tech all around us was rapidly changing and shifting from various forms of analogue to hybrids with digital to full digital.

Gang violence and violent crimes in general were actually going down sharply every time a new console released, and even more when shit like mortal kombat and GTA San Andreas was released.
Helicopter moms threw a big enough stink the government did a study and released this info to gaming magazines.

Nevermind the craze of flash games, and specifically the explosion of stickfigure animations and games that happened at the end of the 00's

Imagine the MASSIVE difference in being able to just have something be in 3D at all.
