Yeah I think the "play V as a merc" phase should have lasted longer. You have to do the prologue to open up the whole map and that introduces the plot with Keanu Silverhand right off the bat. You don't really get a chance to "live as V" before the storyline takes that shift.
This honestly could have been solved if the map was open from the start. You can play as a merc and do random side jobs and live the "Cyberpunk" life for 100+ hours before you ever get introduced to Keanu's character and I think that would have been better.
Just introduce V and Jackie as a couple mercs doing some dirty work to earn credits. That's all the prologue should have been. You play the Cyberpunk life and then maybe half way into the second act or maybe at the end of the second act you introduce the Johnny Silverhand plot point.
Up until that point, Johnny Silverhand should just be a myth, a legend and characters refer to him as some kind of local legend/hero.
I am willing to be that Cyberpunk was revised like a dozen or so times. The development of this game was PLAGUED, and we knew that since before the game even released. I wonder if Johnny Silverhand was supposed to appear later in the game at some point but someone in the dev team said "nooooo people expect Keanu Reeves, just start the game with him".
