Apocalypse works okay right now on My Machine(tm) via steam. It's not broken, it's definitely xcom classic janky but more in having an obtuse and frankly godawful layered mapping system for battles, hence why just nuking the slums is easier sometimes.

Play realtime for battles rather than turn-based if you do pirate the gog version or something: Apocalypse has a tun of high-movement enemies that can just wipe you on their turn without you even seeing them, or trap enemies who fuck you with reaction shots when you kill them. I've always liked apoc though.
