Pokemon before Switch used to consistently be the games with the highest production value on every system they were on. Hands down. That's why you never saw anyone complaining about the graphics until the Switch games. Obviously they've aged now, but at the time the 3DS games were the absolute pinnacle of what the system was capable of.
I don't know why Gamefreak gave up when they started making games for Switch, but they weren't always like this.
