Actually, before that peasants did the farming, housework, maintenance & though not slaves, they were not allowed to leave & look for better work.
Even if they could leave, you had to be in a union or club to work any profession & they didn't accept walk-ins without some lord's permission & request, unless you Dad was in that profession.
So most of Europe basically had 'Slavery' until after the Reformation.
Basically, Protestants helped end the widespread 'slavery' in Europe.
