SSRIs only work for anxiety, bipolar, significant hormonal changes, and various kinds of outbursts. Women especially think that negative emotion is synonymous with depression, and so they think that's how SSRIs are fixing them when really it's making them not have such huge emotional swings. They take them and stop screaming or crying inappropriately.
SSRIs should be thought of as a different kind of antipsychotic that levels emotion by overstimulating serotonin signalling. After several weeks the synaptic receptors will down-regulate, preventing high levels of transmission. For someone who is actually depressed they may feel high initially but in the long term will find that they are even less motivated than they were before. What they need in the long run is more neural transmission, not less.
