You don't need to change any options/buffs and just play with what they give you
There's 4 "modes" of getting points.
1. eating mode: make sure you pick 2-3 eaters max because you run out of food for them(cubes and spikey mobs, pick stuff that buffs and gives you free points when other stuff gets eaten
2. building/combining mode, make sure you're always picking stuff which can combine with stuff already on the field, pick rocks which can combine with everything when they come up
3. evolving mode, didn't pay attention to this one because anything i chose gave me points
4. the exchange mode i didn't bother to understand at all, i just kept choosing stuff that gets off field fast and blue stuff which gets more buffs when other stuff gets off the field

You can finish the event with the echo recruitment phantasma blessing only, i did anyway. Once you get all the buffs in the dream boon section, the gameplay begins to snowball and it's much easier going forward.
Biggest tip is read the descriptions and wing it, you don't need to watch guides, use your common sense and intuition and think of the avatar background reward that awaits at 1000 points, you do like Phrolova, right?
