Is Mcdavid likely? No

Is it possible? Yes

1) The leafs forward core of Matthews (27), Nylander (29), Knies (22), is younger than the Oilers with Draisaitl (29), RNH (32), Hyman (33). Not to mention Cowan starting this year.

2) For defense, the Leafs Dcore is very solid, but aging. But their top prospects after Cowan are all Dmen. Not to mention, they will have tons of cap space to go after any top Dmen free agents going forward.

3) Mcdavids' first season of his next contract is the 2026/27 season. That year onward, the Leafs are only missing 3 draft picks. The 2027 1st & 3rd, and 2028 4th. Other than that, they have all their picks.

4) The Leafs have very good goaltending locked up for term. Where Edmonton doesn't even have good goaltending figured out now.

5) As the cap continues to expand, fewer and fewer teams will be able to spend to the full cap every year. But that won't be a concern for Toronto.
