My theory is that it's a full on demon that is working with Dess.

Basically, FRIEND is a demon that took the appearance of Dess' old doll, Seam, to gain her trust and convinced her to help a plan to give everyone FREEDOM.
But that everyone includes FRIEND, who will become able to do whatever evil shit it wants.
