Of course, science can't know the unknowable and never claims to. The best science can do is use theory and hypothesis; taking what we know, and finding something that explains it all. Cosmic microwave background doesn't have a rationale to exist, but it's explained by the idea that, if the universe is expanding, maybe it was small at one point.
