Benching without a spotter should be done in a rack. Benches without safeties are bullshit. Your gym literally wants you working in the fucking buddy system. Benches without safeties are often fucking trash like this one.

In a rack you can lift to failure solo. You set the safeties just below your chest. They’re not there for the bar slipping out of your grip. They’re there for lifting to failure. When you fail, you lower the bar to your chest then roll it toward your stomach. You chest can’t compress as low as your stomach. If your benching without a spotter a slight arch and aren’t morbidly obese, your stomach will be lower than your chest and you won’t even squish yourself. If the safety is a little low, or you’re fat, you’ll squish yourself stomach a bit, but the safeties take most of it.

Pic should be the standard. There is no argument against this.

Totally agree. Nearly every gym is equipped to cater to the cultural milieu. People want bench press stations, so they have bench press stations.

You can bench in a rack if the rack has a fine enough adjustment on the safeties. When you’re lying on your back, your sternum is higher than your stomach. If your a giant fat fuck, you’re stomach can compress lower than your sternum without hurting you.

You just set the safeties on the rack so they’re just a little lower than your sternum. I’ve never seen anyone bench in a rack in a public gym.

Racks take up just as much space as a bench. They’re multi-purpose as well. The only reason for bench press stations instead of racks is some kind of misplaced tradition.

People with good home gyms know exactly what I’m talking about.
