Because ZDoom and its deriatevies were the first to support advanced Doom engine abilities like ACS scripting (a la Raven's Heretic and Hexen) and Strife-like story-telling. Vanilla ports didn't expand beyond Dehacked and Boom until MBF21 (20 years), and this still is a major issue.
