>always like to say that the Khmer Rouge was one of the most frightening moments of the 20th Century, arguably in recorded history. Not because of their military prowess, they had none, but because they are the perfect condensed lesson on the consequences of mindless unthinking obedience when taken to their logical conclusion. First, moral opprobrium, then, societal annihilation.

The most frightening thing isn't that it happened, it's that, all things considered, these things should be happening more often but they're not. Somehow we're avoiding all that horror and we don't even know what we're doing right.
>just don't do gommunism, kids
It absolutely cannot be that simple. There are sick, sick people everywhere ready to inflict hell on the world that they hate even if, or especially if, it consumes them. Lots of ins in every system for them to exploit.

Reminds me of a quote from some Terry-Pratchett tier author I read in highschool.
>The world is constantly ending. Every day some greater evil is about to awaken and everything is about to be destroyed. And every day some heroic action or selfless sacrifice by unknown and soon-forgotten nobodies brings us back from the brink and buys us just one more day.
I'm paraphrasing. Might have actually been Terry-Pratchett, too, even though I don't like his writing.
