You're forgetting one massive factor - logistics.
The locals had their stuff around the corner, while the Spaniards had it across the Atlantic Ocean.
Also, putting one tribe on another is not as easy as you might think. You have the language barrier, and the possibility that the local tribes will unite against you any moment.
And then you have the numbers, which by itself is also a major factor.

So yes, it was very impressive.
