Employers in the states have to pay you. Office internships are about the only exception. I think the biggest crock of shit I've seen with all of that is the "temp agency to full time employee" pipe line that isn't a pipe line, where you get paid less than a normal employee to be treated like garbage.
To answer OP's question, there are job rehab programs for autists, and that's how I started out at a grocery store. Had a part time gig at fedex just before covid because I wanted more money, and at the part time gig I made a connection with someone who'd become a manager at a furniture store, and I've been doing that for like 4 years. I've never worked for free, and I won't. Hoist the black flag before that shit or something.
