Kris' passiveness always leads me to the question of how long he's been possessed. We're initially led to believe that Asriel's departure made him depressed, but it's clear that the soul is a much bigger obstacle. Judging by his reaction to it right from Chapter 1, he's already used to having it, so perhaps before (You) take control, it just sort of waited inside him like some sleeper agent trigger. And when no one's at the controls, perhaps he just becomes numb and limited in his options. Probably what led him to try and rip the soul out in the first place.
