>hey really don't want to expand the shmup audience because it dilutes the genre with tourism
I can undertand that, but sadly arcades are realistically never coming back, at least in their classic form. What's the worst that could happen by trying to reignite interest in the genre?
Shmups will ALWAYS be niche no matter what. But promoting them and promoting ideas such as that there is value in mechanical complexity and games being challenging can do a lot of good, specially in the long term.
The video game industry in general seems to be moving towards a shittier place each passing year, and most indie games wear "retro" style graphics as a skinsuit while being piss easy.
Point being, if nobody tells new or existing but not yet "hardcore" players that these games exist eventually the genre will die out even at the indie level.
Worst case scenario a bunch of poser tourists buy a bunch of games and shortly after move on, best case scenario a new wave of players get genuinely interested in shmups and challenging arcade style games and the torch gets passed on with indies.
Also, I believe eventually japanese players and developers will move en masse to PC (and not just use it for porn games). It would be better if there's more people playing shmups by then.
