when I modded my dreamcast. My gf bought a DC for me as a gift but it had a bad optical drive. I felt bad and wanted her to see me enjoying it so I snuck the GDEMU optical drive emulator in there. I was sort of enthralled by the passionate dreamcast community. Pros: Being able to play on the old CRT, being able to use the various VMU functionalities, easy 4player with no PC controller bullshit that ALWAYS HAPPENS when I have 3 friends over for local and we try emulating something. Yea its just a more authentic experience. Since then I just avoid emulation and do all my gaming on modded hardware almost like a self-imposed challenge. Its been good times.

modded consoles rated on difficulty
>3DS modding
easy. just exploiting and flashing software. Very useful for portability and 2 screen function of 3ds and DS.
>N64
EASY love my everdrive64
>DC
ez GDEMU install is just a screwdriver procedure. I didnt bother replacing the fan.
>PS2
medium. was kind of involved. The freemcboot card is ez but then setting up the Hardrive out the back and all the software and making it pretty took a while and a lot of parts off ebay.
>Gamecube
ez. JUST installed a new OpticalDriveEmulator called FlippyDrive that is super clever and you dont even need to remove normal disc functionality. requires special nintendo screwdriver.

^no soldering required for any of these

FAILED
>PS3
it just didnt work idk what happened
>xbox
Im retarded at soldering and I think I used too much heat. Need a new motherboard and to actually use lead solder because whatever safety solder I was using didnt fuckin melt.

if I can do it you guys can. But I am blessed cuz I have all these consoles and controllers and peripherals laying around. PLUS CRTs to get the most out of their 480i and 480p signals. I loathe HD lag.
