I felt brain damaged coming from over half a decade of MMOs into owning a Steam account and trying out lots of classics and indies and playing contemporary new releases regularly for the first time. I had no idea what a Metroidvania was and kept bouncing off them because I thought they were just slow platformers, I was too retarded to control CRPGs, etc
