BG1 could afford that because most BG1 companions are barely companions at all - most of them are just placeholders with an associated class that you can mix and match and fit in your party for mechanical purposes. Need an archer? Grab Kivan or Coran. Need a mage? Edwin is your guy. Need a thief AND a mage? Imoen to the rescue. BG1 had 25 (!) recruitable companions. Having mutually exclusive companions is much less costly in that context. Modern CRPGs with their 6-10 fleshed-out companions can't afford that. It's a shame but it's also a consequence of players demanding more realized characters.
