Vivi being the MC would have been compelling for 2 reasons;
1) First FF protagonist that doesn't look gay.
2) His journey was about accepting his mortality. (i.e. purely existential.)

If Square let Vivi dominate FF9's narrative, we could have gotten Expedition 33 a quarter-century earlier than we did.
