The problem with movies today is the writers, not the characters. Casting white men as strong protagonists isn't going to fix that. I'm pretty sure it's been decades since somebody wrote a great script that got picked up by a studio based on its own merits. Now the writers are just rooms full of creative writing degree holders who come to work and get told which IP they're supposed to ruin this month. They contrive some little half-baked twist, 'like the old one except this time...' and then print out page after page of circular bullshit to fill up ten episodes. Maybe some of them are even talented people but we'll never know because their original ideas aren't welcome.
