I am old enough to remember this.
I was jumping out of planes at Benning when I was 18.
Our bootcamp was:
>two guys had a problem with each other
>off came the uniform tops
>both went behind a barracks building
>whoever came back, won
And that was that.
This included cadre.
It was what it was.
The thinking was, if you couldn't handle a little scrap then how would you purport yourself in combat when someone was trying to kill you intentionally?
When they went to "stress cards", I knew things were on a timer. Time to go.
This was not an urban legend - it was ongoing when I was a few years downrange from induction.
They did away with it, then swore it never happened.
