The PSP / PC versions are the best, with all updates/features. Though I hear the PC release has some jank you may need mods to fix.

Do NOT play any version of D1 with "HD" sprites, you'll be missing out on a lot of Disgaea 1's unique designs. Rather than recreating the original sprites in HD, they were replaced with updated or similar-looking sprites from Disgaea 4 onwards, so you get uncanny shit like these gangster looking dudes (left) gobbling like turkeys because they replaced a D1-exclusive enemy that had their mouths stitched shut (right).

Most of the generic classes also underwent design changes that carried on into the rest of the series, so Disgaea 1 is the only place to see them.
