RMR type 2 is still a effective optic, it's hilariously ancient but still works. There are some Tan Holosuns, they're okay, better than the RMR in many quality of life features but the RMR is still regarded as more bomb proof.

yeah. instead of aligning front and rear you just put the dot on the target and pull the trigger. you can effectively track the sight through recoil (red streak) and can put the red streak on target at speed. There's a learning curve to be able to draw the gun and have the dot on the target, but once you master that you become a better shooter in general since you have to develop an "index" where you understand how your body changes where the sight is.
in competition shooting red dot vs iron classifiers, red dots are 25% faster par times. Meaning a red dot shooter is expected to clear a stage/drill 25% faster.
