Wrong. While certain harmony and positive outlook does affect your looks thorough development, it doesn't depend on noble traits from the standpoint of society, as much as harmonious.
There's plenty of beautiful, yet vapid, not particularly bright, spoiled and arrogant people who are unfit for spiritual pursuits, even though in their daily life they cultivated joy, charm, appreciation and satisfaction which found reflection in abovementioned harmony and beauty. Similarly a small dose of calm, peaceful, enduring melancholy can add to the beauty of a growing person (if they exhibit other traits, like ones above) but it doesn't make them good.
By comparison, yes, many ugly people grew up in stress, struggle and with internal dissonance, but developed strong, enduring, good traits to function and offer value.
>Am I wrong to see beauty as a kind of metaphysical calling card?
Yes.
It may be potential, it may be a solid foundation in childhood, but that's all.
