It's pretty easy to understand actually.
People like the old school Final Fantasy aesthetic.
FF9 is the only time a world like that was fully realized in 3D outside of the MMOs and the remakes of 3 and 4.
So naturally anyone who wants a more modern take on the setting of the first five games is gonna look towards 9.
I guess there's also 16 now but uh I think the action gameplay isn't doing it any favors.

It's always bothered me how the game doesn't really coalesce into anything meaningful.
The individual journeys (some of) the characters go on are good, but they don't really come together to torm some sort of grander narrative conclusion.
They just kill death and the game ends on a sort of wet fart, pretty weird for a Final Fantasy game.
