D1s combat is still peak of the series imo, less emphasis on abilities in favor of gunplay and positioning/movement. Rising, for all it's faults, at least played off of this and Characters like Estela, THE WHITE TIGER GENERAL, and Ning Fei feel like their abilities/kits could socket into D1 relatively fine (given the subclass customization was expanded even further).
D2 floats between you wiping a mop across the enemies faces or nuking the room the minute you step into it unless you consciously choose to forgo the best options in favor of ineffective and clearly lacking abilities/weapons.
If D2 launched with a hybrid D1/D2Y1 subclass system where you could customize everything but got bonuses for selecting "intended" trees it would've been a proper evolution, instead of the abortion they created and built on top of.
