Jax knows all the humans in the circus are just copies of their consciousness with some memories removed. He's constantly looking towards the camera and performing cruel acts because he knows their actual human selves are watching and laughing their asses off. The recent problem Jax is actually struggling with is getting too chummy with Pomni because human Ribbit is likely watching and their bonding jeopardizes his real-world relationship. Now Jax is going crazy trying to remain the "funny guy" for what's in essence a hidden-camera reality show while making sure his real human self benefits from his antics when the only way to maintain the facade is to trash all social connections. He's a slave living and working for himself.
