Honestly, The thing that male characters don't wear clothing should be more like guidelines rather than a hard rule. I mean even Looney toons will occasion have Bugs fully clothed if it's for the gag. I don't see how Sonic wearing a suit, tie and god forbid, suit-pants in the quite rare formal event would break the series.
