They like 3D because it's cheaper and faster. Doesn't age as well, though.

Emphasis on the /k/ in pea/k/. I agree that SDF is the most consummate franchise entry (Minmay's repertoire beats everything that came afterwards), but Plus will make me unapologetically söypog all day at its painstakingly detailed designs for everything from VFs to small arms. Shit like the Walther rollmarks on Yang Neumann's sidearm that we only see for a few seconds.
Forgive me for sperging out, but I fucking love the visual presentation of the 30 years of in-universe technological progress that's happened since the time of the original series. Temperamental, poorly understood technologies that were prototyped on the SDF-1 such as pinpoint barriers and the fold drive have now been mastered and improved to the point where we're starting to minaturize and implement them in individual fighters. Surface-to-orbit flight no longer requires solid rocket boosters, FAST Packs have been streamlined to the point where they don't get in the way of in-atmo fighter mode combat, etc. In the opening scenes we see how the VF-11 is a step above the capabilities of the VF-1 we remember, but as we go to New Edwards and see Project Supernova ramp up, it becomes clear that the prototype stars of the show are a generational leap ahead of everything else that walks, GERWALKs, or flies. If the VF-1 is a Tomcat, the -19 is a F-22 (And the -21 is a YF-23. The fighter competition taking obvious inspiration from the irl Advanced Tactical Fighter fly-offs tickles my 'tism.)
