It's still possible. James could just overhear them talking about the play and decide to chime in because it's Mike-related. It fits about as well as David's interjection, and naturally they wouldn't want to continue talking about Lucy trying to kill herself in front of this obviously airheaded rando. I don't know why James is back to being excited about Mike after being so comprehensively over him recently, but that's a problem regardless of the surrounding context.
Of course this is all just copium because I don't want the biggest bombshell in the comic to have been a dud twice in a fucking row. Come on Taeshi you coward, write Mike somehow recovering from everybody he knows blaming him for a suicide. Don't just sidestep it.
