Season three starts with Aang finally waking up from a weeks-long coma. The lightning strike has blocked his chakras, and he can't enter the Avatar State. The Team fill him in what he's missed: they captured a Fire Nation boat and are hiding within the Fire Nation itself. With the Earth Kingdom lost, they've lost the massive army they wanted from the Earth King. The whole world thinks the Avatar is dead. Instead of the huge attack on the day of the eclipse, they'll have go in with with small group of whoever is left to help them. Meanwhile, Zuko has been welcomed back into the Fire Nation with welcome arms, as Azula told everyone that HE killed the Avatar, not herself. Zuko and Mai start a relationship, and Zuko begins to enjoy the royal sweet life and positive attention from his father. However, he slowly starts to realize that he's made a terrible mistake. Oh, and Katara is forced to learn a terrible variation of waterbending, bloodbending.
There's also a beach episode. You've probably seen screenshots of it.
The day of the eclipse comes, and the attack on the Fire Lord goes forward. However... he's not there. Back when Azula was pretending to be an Earth warrior in season 2, she learned of the attack plans and warned her father. Zuko DOES know where the Fire Lord is, and uses the brief window of him not being to firebend to force him to listen to him. Zuko calls the Fire Lord out on all the evil bullshit he's being doing, including, you know, burning his own son's face over a minor infraction, and tells him that he's joining the Avatar. The Fire asks why Zuko doesn't just kill him now, Zuko says it's the Avatar's job to kill him. The world will see it as a justified response, and not just a prince killing a king for power. With the eclipse ending, the strike force surrenders to the Fire Nation as a distraction, so Team Avatar can escape.
