I don't think that's a signifier that they were besties, maybe that Kris liked/had a crush on Noelle at one point and wanted to impress her. Back in my childhood neighbors gave food and gifts to each other, they don't do that post-covid anymore.
I think the takeaway was that Kris and Noelle ultimately are friends and care about one another even though they were initially a "friend of a friend". They definitely lament not being able to be proper childhood friends since Dess disappeared.
