The Mob is still around (as are other ethnic gangs) but it's nothing like it used to be, as it was fundamentally rooted in Italian _immigrant_ communities, which have all long been assimilated into the larger American culture.

The Godfather was set in the 1950s-60s (and the earlier Depression Era) but you get a clear sense of how it's slowly petering out in The Sopranos, which is set in the 1990s.
