also, i don't remember where i heard this from, but i remember that there was some sort of theory that the spy had more to do with the logistics and perpetuation of the war than he let on, and was just acting oblivious to blend in with the rest of the team.

i wouldnt say it "goes against the ethos of tf2" as tf2 was always a little bit silly and could always be read with a level of meta-humor about its nature as an online multi-payer game, but i guess it does go against tf2s aesthetic identity as it was originally conceived. For what its worth, it's a strong enough style that even all these years later, the community still does a decent-enough job at sticking to it outside of scream fortress/smissmas cosmetics/maps, and even then, maps like wutville are huge outliers.
Things change and evolve and I think thats okay, for the most part. this guy >>543101485
is kinda right on that. I do feel it might be a problem on some level, though, same goes for minecraft

i kinda like the respawn machine hypothesis although emesis blue definitely takes it in a direction that isn't tonally fitting to TF2. The idea of "these aren't even the original people, these are actually clones who have just accepted or try not to think about, their short, pointless lives as cannon-fodder". there's a level of subtle black comedy to that which isn't out of place with the established pre-wackification worldbuilding.
Maybe the whole point is all of this is cleverly-disguised field-testing for all the tech being employed by the classes as weaponry, especially the medic, spy, and engineer.
I have a similar theory about portal, although its kind of in the reverse direction.
