That can be done in 3D, especially with Air riders island as an example. The original, while interconnected, was pretty much split off into multiple side worlds all 4 players could explore separately. If you were to size the island up and double it, you could accomidate a seeting half as large as what the GBA's levels had if you only make a handful of islands
