Superman is ultimately a Christ/Bodhisattva figure. He is more than willing to fight and even kill to keep the peace (should it be the reasonable/responsible option), but his mission is to protect and save the lives of all peoples, no matter how far they have strayed from God or the Middle Path. And that includes Lex. Luthor may have blood on his hands and has brought about great instability and suffering to the world, but that does not mean he is incapable of self-transformation, repentance, and redemption. If anything, it means Superman SHOULD help Lex find his way back to the path of good considering all the brilliant things he CAN do for others. Lex should only be killed if Lex becomes such a big threat that his continued existence would permanently throw the social harmony into total ruin.
