I had a similar story with the same pit bull and ancient dog issue. My local shelter had an non-refundable application fee, an adoption fee, required to inspect my home and interview the people that live there. My family ended up at a BYB instead and $500 later we got an 10 week old husky. Ironies of ironies, at the time, I was totally okay with getting a pit bull because I hadn't considered PTSD can affect most mammals and genetic memory is real.
I just checked the website and they don't have the application fee anymore and the adoption fee is only $65 now. The wording is now they would prefer to inspect the home and interview my family instead of a hard requirement. Not sure what happened in the 10 years since I tried to adopt and not shop.
Our husky has 2 cancers, but is she STRONG. I give her 5 years max left: Even then, 10 years for a husky is decent. I will not consider stepping foot in a shelter because of my experience. I will visit another BYB to purchase a dog no questions asked.
OP, I hope you find the perfect dog for you at a back yard breeder or a family friend that just happened to have puppies. Fuck shelters.
