you could get on the roof by walking up stairs and jumping over a railing, then you can get off the roof the same way. if you walked normally like you didn't know what was going on, no one would know you weren't just a student walking to or from class.
the railing jump is the only risk and it wouldn't be high traffic enough to be much of a risk, especially if the shooter knew the class schedule.

I'll post this again to show how easy getting up there and down would have been. Another anon mentioned that those stairs are right in front of the campus police station, but if it was an inside job, that's no issue, and even if they weren't they would have been out among the crowd securing the event, not at the station.
Safest way to get out would have been with everyone else, just blend into the crowd and drive off when everyone else does.
