Lorewise planeswalkers have existed since day 1. And the mythos behind characters like Urza being so fucking busted that it would be impossible to depict their full potential in a card is the kind of idea that sparks the imagination. AND it was cool to have some young planeswalkers as cards as one offs back then. But yes, the whole era of magic where they kept shilling planeswalkers was awful.
My first magic hiatus was around original the innistrad block (innistrad/dark ascension/avacyn restored) and that was absolutely fucking awesome mtg we were getting back then. Zendikar block followed by phyrexian mirrodin block followed by innistrad were some of the best years I spent playing mtg.
I then returned for the battle for zendikar block which was absolutely fucking dogshit. Then there was kaladesh and amonkhet and all that shit? I feel like around that time the card design from standard had shifted from prioritizing 1v1 to start milking the commander playerbase with cards that were abhorrently unplayable in 1v1 formats and started wording "all opponents". As far as I'm conerned that was the beginning of the end. Especially because I heard that constructed format during the tarkir block was great (and that's what was immediately before the god awful battle for zendikar block). That's when the retarded gatewatch came to be too. So... 2015?
I still point to picrel as my "jumped the shark" moment and I dropped the game right then and there.
