The Russian army was 6x smaller than the Ukrainian one though and was also alone in the fight from day one. Still Ukraine couldn't push back a much smaller force which *relied* on the 55,000 strong ragtag LPR/DPR militias to do the bulk of the eastern fighting at that time due to having so few men in the Ukraine.
Ukraine's best and only chance to win the war was in September-November 2022 and they fucked it up royally. The only reason Russia is still in the war now is because of General Surovikins masterful pre planning in Zaporozhye(which paid off dramatically in Ukraines catastrophic grand offensive defeat during 4th June 2023-9th December 2023) and his evacuation defence psy op at Kherson which saved 50% of the deployed Russian army in Ukraine. Other than that, Ukraine should have crushed Russia with sheer numbers.
