To be honest, a part of right bank of the Dnepr river is a must too. The Kakhovka reservoir is needed to exist to maintain the Zaporozhskaya nuclear power plant activity and to supply Crimea through the Northern Crimean channel. But for this the Kakhovka dam and hydro power plant on Dnepr have to be fixed.
The entire so called Eastern Ukraine is a complex united system. Everything is connected. That's why Lakhta whores saying about Russia not needind Kharkov, or this, or that, because muh khokhols, muh country ain't need no lands are disgusting.

Some relief, yes, especially in the cold seasons. For the summer needs (including industrial ones) the South Eastern part of Kharkov region has to be included, I mean cities along Oskol and Severskiy Donets: Kupyansk, Izyum and so on. It's not just the battle for the sake of the battle in Kupyansk. It has a lot of goals from the foothold for advancement to Izyum, Balakleya, Barvenkovo. to water. And those cities are also needed for water and for logistic of Slavyansk and Kramatorsk.
In the best case Russia will need the left-bank part of Dnepropetrovsk region for the existing Dnepr-Donbass channel.
