Rick is kinda better than Chester so I usually keep him unpromoted and tough it out so he gets to at least Lv30 by the time you get the wing. It's certainly not as easy as leveling up unpromoted Karna before you get the second Vigor Ball, but it's doable.

I've heard Eric is better than both overall though.
