There was an old theory that the phenomeon of Pokemon was a recent thing, like they weren't naturally occuring but spawned from some massive (non-cataclysmic) event, but people like Kurt and pokemon like Mew and Mewtwo indirectly imply that Pokemon have been around for entire generations of human existence, if not significantly longer. With pokemon having such extreme power, even a few roving bands of high-level Typhlosion could shape the world in fire the same way Groudon can. Human technology is certainly impressive but it required lots of time to set up and innovate, time that early humans wouldn't have had. Really boggles the noggle
