I can't speak to the artfag side, but it's more or less the same on the writer side. You can make some decent money by appealing to those with more debased fetishes, which is usually murderfag stuff alongside things like scat. I believe Greenanon managed to get a fair amount of gentle-focused commissions, but he had hewn his niche out quite early on.
