If we're going to be technical, then Hussie was technically a horrible writer who had no idea what he was doing. Homestuck is heavily styled as a pastiche of an RPG adventure game, and the progression of its villains was probably one of its cleanest depictions of this in terms of how it's laid out and presented to you.
>Jack Noir is the disc-one final boss, thr Jenova; a threatening, overbearing presence that falls out of favor by the narrative and lays up the big bad
>Doc Scratch is the self-styled puppetmaster, the Hojo
>Condy is the dragon, the Golbez, the big bad's muscle and most active form of direct confrontation with the party
>all of these characters are, ultimately, fodder for
>LE, the big bad, the Chaos; to see him is to know that the game's about to end
Not that there's anything fundamentally wrong with trying to play around this formula, but the way Hussie actually handles these characters (like he handles most things) is generally so fucking rancid that he would have been far better off just playing the whole vidya angle straight.
